  1. I decided to go natural about a year ago. I should have made the decision sooner because my hair doesn't do too well with relaxers. It was very thin and I could never get it to grow enough just to touch my shoulders. So one day my cousin, who has been natural for about 5yrs, gave me some good advice on how going natural is more healthy for your hair. I stopped putting relaxers and chemicals in my hair immediately after about 6mths of transiting I did a BC. My hair is thicker than it's EVER been and it's growing so fast, I've never been more happy with my hair than I am now! I can honestly say I'll NEVER go back to the creamy crack!!

  2. After years and years of dying my hair blond, blow-drying & straightening all the time, I stopped everything. It was 3 years ago. Now, my hair color is natural, I air-dry and moisturize with pure traditional Shea butter from Mali, West Africa. And guess what? My hair looks great, healthy & shiny.

  3. I decided to go natuaral after having a bout of severe acne. I went to a dermatologist who prescribed an antibiotic and 2 creams for me. The antibiotic made me nauseacous , and the creams one left my skin dry, the other stung on my face. I then started looking at natural alternatives for my face, and it was then that I came across the oil cleansing method. I tried it and loved it, and my skin seemed to respond well to it. So while reading up on all these wonderful oils which are truly nature's gift to us, I realized that the same oils were good for hair, and so it was then that I decided I would use natural products for my hair and skin, and that is when I decide to be natural. That was October 2011.

  4. I went natural because:
    1) I suffer from migraines and each time I'd get a relaxer, I 'd have never ending headaches that turned into the worse kind of migraine.
    2) my mom is natural and was totally encouraging me to do it

  5. I went natural about 1 year ago because I wanted to know what I really looked like under my mother & society's sense of what was beautiful. My mother permed my hair when I was 12 & I got a relaxer every month since then....My mother has a perm and so do the rest of the women in my family so, I transitioned and saw it more as my journey to me....It was a very enlightening expirience but, I wouldn't trade nothing for my journey. Love myself, naturally.

  6. I went natural a year ago. March 12,2011 is my anniversary. When I was about 15 is when I received my first relaxer and the only reason why I wanted a relaxer then is because I wanted to wear a feather which was the style back then...lol...so I continued to get my hair relaxed then I got it colored in 2010 it damaged the hell out of it, so I decided to go natural then cause i cut all of it off. So I wore the short hair for a while, my hair is naturally wavy any way as they would say " I have good hair" so it grew out then I put a relaxer in it again and notice the relaxer wouldn't take, i was wasting my money cause my hair would still be wavy so i cut it off again. I let it grow out and realize I don't need no relaxer so i'm here today with beautiful natural hair and loving every minute of it. No more creamy crack for me.

  7. I've been natural for 9 years... After I gave birth to my daughter whenever I put a relaxer in my hair it felt like my head was on fire... Being me I still pushed on but then I literally had bald patches in my head so I was either I will keep upon this path or go natural and have hair.. Of course I choose the lather

  8. When I was 17 a friends dad who was taller than me told me I was going bald. He was right. Now, some years later, I keep my hair very short (down to the wood) and don't use any products on my scalp but a bit of black soap every morning.

  9. I went natural in 2005... Simply because I had no clue what it was like to deal with my kinks & coils. Had never experienced them. And that's how it's been since =)

  10. It has been 3 years for me, since turning 40. I used to use harsh dyes and perm my hair. The last straw was the hairdresser who burnt my hair. It was literally melted up to 1 inch from my scalp. I got it cut evenly and kept it trimmed (by a new hairdresser) until all the layers caught up to make 1 layer. Then I would get it trimmed only every 5 months. It is down to my elbows now. I do use powdered henna, but that is a natural product, twice a year when I start seeing strands of white hair. I love henna, it seems to add shine and body. I also use a lot of olive oil and shea butter to moisturize, so I don't see split ends often. I still only trim my hair twice a year; I guess I am still a bit afraid of hairdressers!

  11. I went natural in 2008 because I was tired of being a hypocrite telling my teenage daughter about the dangers of relaxers but using it myself.

  13. I began my transition seven months ago when I learned about my second pregnancy. My uncle had just passed and seeing my cousins with their beautiful curls gave me the inspiration and motivation. Also, my mother started to lock her hair 9 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child. I dedicate my transition to my unborn baby girl. Besides I was sick of being a slave to the creamy crack! New hair, new start, new life!

  14. I decided to go natural for many reasons. One reason is that, as a black guy, I never really knew my own hair texture. Secondly, I started working at LUSH and I learned about all the chemicals that are in soaps, shampoos, and all kinds of products that arent really beneficial for me as a person and black man. Thirdly, I went natural and decided to grow my hair out to give men a bigger voice in the natural hair movement. It seems dominated by women but I believe that will change as we see more men accept who they are and not assimilate into corporate culture.

  16. I decided to go natural March of 2011, I bc'd June 2011. I decided to go natural simply because I was tired people over processing my hair and ending up with damaged hair...I love my natural hair and I definitely love not having to worry about when the next time its gonna fall out because of a chemical malfunction!!!

  17. 8 years ago,I "had" to go natural, because I coundn't afford relaxers anymore.Back then I really didn't know how to care my hair. I also had gotten a lot flack for it,mostly from my mother. 2 years later,I decided to transition again. I had learned all I could, and still am learning to this day.I recently went on trip to Detroit, and decided to press my hair.To my suprise, I discovered I am bsl.

  22. I just did my BC 3-28-12. I'm on a journey to grow my hair natural for the first time in years to bra strap length. I just really want thick healthy natural hair. I am almost 50 and this is the first time that I've seen my natural hair since I was in my 20's. I'm really looking to it. I'm doing this with my daughter.

  23. I was relaxing my hair for Ressurrection Sunday and I put the remainder of the "relaxer" in the trash. I was in the shower rinsing it out and when I got out my 2yr old daughter had one side of her head slathered with the "relaxer" I had thrown out. It was the first and last time she got in the trash. I couldn't believe it!! I just did the whole head to keep her from looking too crazy. Two YEARS later (November 16, 2006) I decided to go natural because I was just about to "relax" my daughter's hair when she looked up at me and asked "Why do you have to make my hair straight to make me pretty?" I WAS DONE!! I couldn't let my daughter's self esteem be determined by how straight her hair was. I threw away about 6 tubs of "relaxers" and texturizers that day and never looked back!! My 9yr old has a full healthy head of locs that she LOVES!! ~I don't need a relaxer because my hair isn't stressed~

  24. I went natural last February after years of struggling with dandruff and dermatitis. After the doctor told me that I should use this very expensive prescription oil and tar shampoo, I knew that there had to be a better way. Since going natural, my entire hairline has grown back and my scalp is healthier than it has ever been. #naturalfortherestofmylife

  27. I decided to go natural a day after my birthday September 4 2011. I decided that I was going to stop smoking before that month was over & I did. then i thought, why stop there? So I decided to also get rid of unnecessary weight (him) and I did. By this time I was on a roll. I wanted a change, an even bigger outward yet inward change, and that's when I decided to go natural! I don't EVER want to perm or BLEACH my hair again! "There is an attitude the comes with natural hair, as if you have been taken back in time or remembered how to love yourself just as you are."

  28. I decided to go natural because i wanted to start all over and grow back healthy and non-chemical hair. When my hair was relaxed it broke off and and became very thin. But last year i had gotten braids and it was almost time for prom i took them out and got a inadvisable and then a couple of weeks i took it out after prom my hair was so thin and damaged and i was about to go out to a party so i looked in the mirror and got the scissors and started cutting and after i was done i felt so free and relived ! today i am 9 1/2 month's natural and happy and proud ! I love my natural hair and is so excited for my 1 year anniversary on July 14th ^_^

  29. I went natural back in 2000 with locs. Then I took my locs out and I would go and get my hair pressed by 2008 I put my locs back in. In the end of 2010 I decided I wanted to wear my natural hair out so I stared to look more into growing my hair out without twisting it. I knew about videos being on YouTube but I never took the time to look at them. A friend at work showed me some one day and that's when I found information about how there are products out there for our hair the natural way So I cut the rest of my locks off then this was I dec 2010 I have been loving my hair Iam 46 years old and I love my natural me and telling others on how good it feels taking care of my hair and me.

  30. Hi, I went natural September 20, 2007. And every year I have an anniversary party for myself (lame but I love it). I do my hair but I am by no means a professional and one day I tried a new color in my hair but it damaged my relaxed hair. My hair was falling out in chunks and I was crying hysterically. After two monts of growth, I did the big chop and I haven't looked back since.

  33. Went natural in August 2011, a day after my birthday. Kept a natural short hair, always trimmed short from childhood till after high school when l permed it. Hair has never been healthy since; a cycle of growth, over relaxing and break-offs. Finally decided to chop it off in August 2011 and have loved the freedom ever since!!

I started going natural in May 2011 because I noticed that my hair was becoming brittle and thin and it had never been that way before. I got more into natural healthcare and it got me thinking that I should remove the chemicals from my hair care regimen and see what I would end up with.I gradually cut off the relaxed ends until I built up the courage to cut them all. What a pleasant surprise! My hair has a beautiful texture and curl pattern and it is so strong and thick! I barely ever experience breakage or split ends. Extra virgin olive oil does the trick for me. I'm only 22 and I have no memory of life before the creamy crack but I will certainly never put a relaxer again. I can't wait to see how beautiful my hair will be in the years to come.

  35. I went natural on July 9, 2010. I made the decision for three reasons:
    1. The medication I take has the chance to cause hair loss. Why use chemical relaxers and increase the chance that my hair will fall out and possibly never grow back?
    2. I didn't have the time to sit in a salon for 3-4 hours every 1-2 weeks to have my hair last for a few days and then try to find something to do with it until my next appointment. What a cycle!
    3. Money, money...money! I spent so much money on my hair when it was relaxed it's ridiculous. My stylist was great and she took good care of my hair but my pockets were suffering something terrible.
These are three of the main reasons that I decided to go natural and I'm so happy :-) I'm learning to appreciate and embrace myself at each stage of my hair growth. I know more about my hair now than I have my entire life! I'm so happy to be natural, naturally me :-)

  36. I had my hair relaxed when I was 9 years old by my mother from Dominican Rep. to whom relaxing was second nature. I had long natural hair down to my back up until that point in time and was always given compliments to because of my lovely long curls. When I had gone to my cousins house, my little cousin was playing with my hair and she put something in it and to my dismay it caused a lot of damage. My mother saw my disappointed face and to her disappointment she had to cut all of my hair off into a short bob and relaxed it. I never saw my natural hair after, not until July 23, 2010 on my birthday when I cut all of my relaxed hair off and went natural completely for the second time around. I have not looked back since and have been enjoying my natural curls which are a lovely mix of 3c/4a/4b curls. I have a hard time taking care of it because I dye it which makes it dry and brittle a lot but I am beginning to look into more wholesome ways of dying my hair so that my locks won't suffer. It was a long and difficult journey but I know that if I keep trying hard my hair will be long, curly, and beautiful again.

  37. Hmmmm depends on how you define natural. No chemical since childhood. No pressing since around 2006 and loc's up 5 years ago yesterday... For me natural and finally was just me becoming true to self. I always hated getting my hair straightened. At thirty i finally to a leap and said Im living to make me happy and screw what everyone, including family has to say. One of the best things I ever did =)

  38. Well i have always admired natural hair but trying to make everyone happy i wouldnt until i moved away from home. I promised myself i would do what i wanted forget what others wanted. I have had my beautiful locs 15yrs and i so luv them wouldnt change a thing. Now of course everyone who looked at me strange love them too. My reason going natural is i hated the damage the perm was causing-having a daughter i will teach her early things i know now-natural all the way!!!

  39. Last relaxer was march 2005 & my bigchop september 2005. I went natural due to my hair becoming more & more resistant to the relaxers. Now I have transitioned over to locs on 12/30/2009 & loved every stage of them.

  41. I've been natural most of my life. Never fully committed to a series of relaxers because they just never became a staple in my hair routine. I can definitely use some Black soap... it's been so long since I've used some, and my most trusted brand is Dudu-Osun!

  42. I have decided to go natural, and I did go natural several times in my life. In the 1970s after I married the first time. In the 1980s after and or in between the Jheri Curls and Hawaiian Silky. Those times I was not completely committed to natural hair, though. I was convinced my hair wasn't 'good' enough to be truly natural. Even in the late 1990s, I called myself having an afro, twists, even dreadlocks, but I was ashamed of my natural textured hair. It wasn't until I developed an intolerance to chemicals and chemical smells that I was almost forced to go truly and completely (aside from shampoos, natural conditioners and oils) natural. That was 2010. I stopped texturizing and coloring my hair. I am silver gray now. I began to lock my hair the end of March, 2011. I am a year locked now, and I won't change my decision for anything. Finally, at the age of 56, I feel completely free. Sometimes I even feel pretty. Imagine that.

  43. I went natural on December 14, 2011. I BC'd after transitioning for about 6 or 7 months. I had been doing my own hair since I was 12 (16 years) and my hair grew down to the middle of my back. Two summers ago we experienced an extremely unusual humid summer in my home town. WIth such long hair I just kept brushing it in to a ponytail without combing through it for weeks. After about 3 1/2 weeks I went to wash my hair and the middle was so knotted up I just combed right through it and wound up ripping out the entire middle section of my hair leaving just about 2 inches. I was devastated because I loved my hair and so did everyone else. I wound up cutting it in to a bob shortly after that but it wouldn't grow back like it used to be and it was terribly unhealthy.

My last relaxer was in May or June of 2011. My transition wasn't bad but as the relaxer grew out I became tired of the two textures. On the morning of December 14, 2012 I was up cramming for an exam. I washed my hair and put in a deep conditioner the night before and had yet to rinse it out. I first just cut my sideburns down to the new growth to "see" how my natural hair looked. I went back to my work, but kept looking in the mirror and with each look my curiosity grew. Finally at about 4 am I went to the mirror pulled out my hair scissors and just started cutting. In 45 minutes I found a happier person within. I felt so liberated and strong that I never questioned the spontaneous decision. Instead, I took a picture of the processed ends on the floor, texted it to my friends and family along with the pic of me and my new look, then swept the hair up and trashed it with ease. I have never been happier in life and my natural hair has given me an inner strength and power that is indescribable. I receive wonderful reactions from total strangers and when I get negative comments I let them roll right off my back and just know that they are coming from people whom wish they could be as strong and bold as ME!

  46. I made the decision June 2010..transitioned 18months and cut the rest off in January 2012..I always wanted to. I tried it 10 yrs ago for like 8 months and gave up..I didn't know what I was doing..but there is so much info now and of course its more acceptable..I was sparked this time by my hairstylist putting a bad perm 'fiberguard' (will never forget the name) in my hair..she tried to blame it on my shampoo and conditioning..my hair was falling out everyday..then I got sick for a min..it was then I knew that I needed to take control of my hair and my health..so I began my journey..that 1 decision initiated so much in my life..more health conscious, spiritual relationship, self-expression, more confidence..I've always been a naturally shy and quiet person.. I can never go back..

  48. I went natural in 1994, my sophmore year in college. I never really felt natural in my own skin with all the perms I had over the years, yet, I knew my family wouldn't be accepting of my natural state. So, I waited until I moved away and made gradual changes. Ever semester, I did something different to mark a new progression in my life. My first sememster, I got my nose pierced. My second semester, I got my cartiledge pierced. My third semester at CAU, I wanted to do something major. I knew I didn't want a perm anymore so I got braids and let my hair grow out under my braids and a few months later one of the freshmen in the dorm I was an RA in took me to her barber and I did a big chop. It was the best feeling ever!!!! So freeing. The biggest compliment I received weren't even the verbal ones. It was the smiles and stares I received just walking down the street. For me, it was the best day ever!!!!

  49. I decided to go natural in August 2010. I got deployed to Iraq and the water over there was very hard on my hair. I notice that my was getting very dry and dull. I decided to start co-washing my hair with bottle water. In less than two months, I notice a big difference in my hair. My hair was retaining moisture and not dull. Decided to do research on natural versus relaxed. I haven't regretted going natural and creamy crack is a thing of the past.

  50. I became natural purely by accident. Over 2 years ago (February 20,2010) I was restless with my hair. I tried highlights, short cuts, mohawks, colors, weaves, and anything else I could dream up. I always liked the style (or forced myself to like it) for a little while but then I grew tired of it. The only time I was kind of satisfied with my hair was when I did rod sets on my short cut permed hair. One day I decided I was going to take off the permed hair and just get a texturizer (I figured shorter, curly hair would be easier to manage because it was during my athletic season, and since I only vaguely remembered my natural hair I thought it was too "nappy" to wear alone) I tried "transitioning" but I couldn't bother so I just shaved it off. It was fine and I liked it because it was simple, but as it grew out I noticed some parts of my hair was straight and my hair growing in was the texture I wanted. The next time I got the texturizer I told the hairdresser to put the texturizer in for less time and when it came out as an afro (which I liked) she gave it a look of disgust. After that experience I stopped going to that salon and my natural hair started to grow in and looked better than the texturized hair. I never texturized again and I have never been happier with my hair.

  52. I went natural accident...o_O! Lol! I did! I was relaxed for like forever and my hair was just acting funky. So, I thought, ” You know? I'm sick of my hair! I'm tired of it not d,oing right. Not keeping a curl and just looking dull!” With that, I decided to just hide my hair for a few months. I put a sew-in in for about a month. I LOVED IT! Woke up in the a.m., shook my head and walked out (Don't worry. I showered!) Lol! Well, I did what we call now, protective styles, from May 2010 to October 2010. Once I took that hairstyle down, I decided to cut my ends before putting in my next style. So I'm just clipping and clipping and clipping. By the time I clipped my ends and middles ;) , I'd already clipped all my perm off. My hair was looking a mess and needed to be shaped. Thank God for my friend who is a barber. The next morning, he shaped my hair. But I looked like the 3rd wheel on the Soul Glo commercial. So, rather than wrestle back and forth about lengths, I told him just to cut it all off. I <3 it! So, that's how I became natural!

  53. My last relaxer was around September 2010. I say around, because I did not intend to go natural. My father passed away October 2010. Although he had a huge bald spot, I remember seeing him out the shower with these beautiful ringlets. I used to always say, "I wish I had his hair." A few of his sisters were natural, probably their entire life. They had beautiful curls. So as a tribute to my dad, I decided to go natural just for a while, just to see my natural texture. So this is why I can't be sure the exact month that I used my last relaxer because I never paid much attention. I did my big chop in February 2011. And here I am today. And FYI, the back of my hair is exactly like my dad's. The rest has a mind of its own, but I wouldn't change it for the world!

  55. I went natural 2 years and 9 months ago. I wanted my hair to be healthy. Period. Relaxers and Jherri curls caused the hair in my crown area to break from age 15! For 20 years, I tried everything. One day it dawned on me that the person I knew with the healthiest, most beautiful hair, had NEVER used a chemical. When I stopped applying chemicals at 35, my crown area started to grow in IMMEDIATELY! I could not believe it. My hair is longer and healthier than it has ever been. This made me what to explore all areas of healthy living...from the foods I eat to the products that I use on my skin. I am embracing healthier living as a lifestyle!

  57. I big chopped in December of 2011. Me and my husband had a talk and he said how he didnt like me hiding my beauty under all the wigs and weave, and that I didnt need to keep getting perms to feel pretty. So after a long deep discussion he pulled out his clippers and cut my relaxer out.Since then he has been a huge help in upping my self esteem and with the natural hair process. I feel so much better about myself than I ever did all because of my husband.

  59. Curiosity, amongst a few other reasons, sparked my interest in "going natural". My hair as a child has always been about mid-back length in its natural stretched state. During a weekend visit to my auntie's house she decided she was going to relax my and my older sister's hair. Our scalp's overall health never recovered thus causing years and years of hairloss, scalp irritation, and horrible weaves. Growing up a very dark skin young woman in a predominantly white neighborhood and a society that chastizes women for donning their natural state of hair Ive always felt a sense of intimidation when approaching the concept of growing out my relaxer or even big chopping. It wasnt until I gave birth to my thrid son when I said to myself "Im so tired of trying to be someone that I am not. I miss my hair being thick and healthy. I wonder if I can grow it back to where it was as a child." And so my hair journey began. I big chopped approximately 2 1/2 months ago and have never been happier or more comfortable in my life. This is me. This is me. This is who I am. And this is who I will be proud of until the day I am laid to rest.

  60. Who can turn down some free dudu osun??! I began going natural in November of 2010. I had moved away to Boston where the wind is crazy and black hair salons are rare and expensive. So I began braiding. I continued braiding without making a decision about permanently going natural. I was just trying to manage my hair. Eventually, I stumbled upon this new natural hair movement and after seeing real women around me doing it, I decided to be committed to it!

  61. I could not believe I waited SIX hours for a beautician FRIEND to START my hair. That was when I was sixteen. As I continued to go to numerous hair salons, I was told not to scratch or I'd burn. BURN? I did not scratch and I still burned. One even told me she had a high success rate of customers not burning while going through the process. NOT! She ended up pouring vinegar on my scalp! Need I say more? I would stretch getting my hair relaxed to every six months. In 2004, I decided to cut my hair, which was below my shoulders, and go natural. I have not regretted it. I actually use DuDu Black Soap on my and my son's hair and shea butter and our hair comes out wonderful. And it has a great scent as well. Love it!

  62. I went natural about 6 years ago, fell off the wagon once and got a relaxer (about 3 years ago)--been natural ever since. My hair texture is thick, soft, and delicate. Therefore, any type of straightner (including pressing) will cause breakage. I have had numerous bad experiences with damaging my hair from all this abuse. I had to come to myself and say enough is enough. I will my gloriously delicate hair given to me by The Creator of the Universe. I now appreciate and will not have it any other way.

  64. I've been natural all my life. I'm currently 18 years old. I did not like been natural at first, because around where i used to live no one had natural hair. My mother did not know how to take care of my hair properly, so i never retain length. Thanks to my mother, even though she did not know how to treat my hair, she never allowed me to get a perm (when it comes to a perm, her NO'S are for real). I thank God every day for giving me a mother that stands firm by her good decisions. Now i know how to retain length and my hair grows every month or less, and the results are very noticeable to everyone. I'm way past shoulder length. My goal is waist length. With God's help anything is possible, so I WILL MAKE IT TO SHOULDER LENGTH. I just need to be patient lol. I've always had low self esteem, but NOT ANYMORE! I have found myself. I know for sure where i stand in life...Something i could not say two years ago. Thank you to blogs like these, and natural youtube videos. you guys help me tremendously, before i felt like the only girl in the world with natural hair, but now IT SEEMS LIKE WE'RE TAKING OVER! LET'S GO :D I really want to try the soap, i was going to order it online, but i didn't have enough money in my account. I look forward to having a pack. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE :D :D

  65. I went natural in 2006. I chose to go natural because I didnt see any benefits of having a relaxer. My hair is thick so 2 weeks after a touch-up...its over. I'm glad I did go natural because I love my look, my style, the natural way God made me...kinky coiled and all!
