What is BLACK SOAP?

We’ve all been there before…you walk into a department store and head for the health and beauty section. You examine a wide variety of cleansing bars and you choose one that seems to match your needs. It usually takes a few tries before you find that one soap that really works for you. Do you ever stop to look at the ingredients of this soap?(2)

You are likely to find triclosan, which can disrupt the thyroid hormone and increased exposure can contribute to the development of breast cancer. You will find fragrance, which is usually a safe word for phthalates, a chemical that can cause birth defects and liver damage. There are so many chemicals that are used in nearly all "cleansing bars" sold in stores today. (2)

I often use the words “never put anything on your skin your wouldn’t eat!”

Whatever soap or cosmetics you use are absorbed through your skin into your blood stream. Health first, beauty second.

So what makes African black soap different that even Dr. Oz applauds it:

Raw Ghana Black Soap

African Black Soap comes from plantain skin, which is a natural source of vitamins A & E & iron. (1)(3)

It is made with rare tropical honeys & pure unrefined Shea butter.

It contains a high amount of glycerin, which absorbs moisture from the air and literally deposits it into the skin, making the skin soft and supple. (2)

African black soap is unique in that it contains no preservatives, color enhancers, or fragrances. (2)

How Black Soap is Made:

First, leaves and bark of various trees and plants are burned in a vat or kettle. These may be leaves from banana trees, plantain skins, palm tree leaves, Shea tree bark, and/or cocoa pods.

Secondly, water is added to ashes to be filtered. Oils such as coconut oil, Shea oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, and cocoa butter are added to the water to create the soap.

The soap is then hand-stirred by local women for at least a day and then set out to cure for about two weeks.(2) (4)

The methods of making traditional black soap and its secrets have been passed down from generation to generation to keep the soap close to Mother Nature and avoid exploitation & imitations. Many have tried to create their version of black soap with all kinds of ingredients, but Ghanaian & Nigerian black soap are the best quality because they are ORIGINAL. (1) The most common form of black soap which comes from the Yoruba people of Nigeria, Togo, and Benin republic is called Ose Dudu (Dudu Osun). Ose Dudu literally means Soap (ose) and Black (dudu).

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

There is no such thing as traditional liquid black soap. If you encounter liquid black soap bear in mind it is not traditional. There are liquid black soaps on the market made from natural ingredients. Do not confuse these with traditional black soap. Liquid black soap is new to the market and an extension of traditional black soap. If you are into natural products, you should ask your vendor what the ingredients are in their liquid black soap. DIY LIQUID BLACK SOAP

For a liquid black soap, fill a container with the soft African Black Soap; crumbled or broken into smaller, more easily dissolved pieces. Add 20% purified or distilled water; again, that's 2 parts water to 8 parts black soap. Seal the container and set aside for several hours. This makes an excellent shampoo or shower gel. (2)

African Black Soap contains a whopping 48% unrefined Shea butter! The commercial soaps and lotions only add 1% to 4% ultra refined, which is too little Shea and it has the healing properties removed; it most likely was refined using a chemical process that leaves trace chemicals in the Shea butter. The average homemade Shea soap can only handle 10% Shea butter. How will I know the difference? Oh, you'll know! African Black Soap is made using a natural lye saponification with no preservatives added or needed. (2)

Warning: The FAKE SOAP is hard, black and does not even compare to the original. Real Black Soap is always brownish-black. The longer the plantain skins are roasted the darker the soap. But the soap is never completely black & it is not scented. (3)

What is Rhassoul Clay?

My job enables me to work with women-owned co-operatives and female producers in Africa.

Recently I received a sample of 100% pure [chemical free] Rhassoul clay from Morocco.

More times than I can count, I've watched many of our customers buy Rhassoul for skin care purposes...but what I've found very intriguing is when some buy it solely to Shampoo with!

So, I decided to give it a try...

Personally, I believe that nature has given us everything. But marketing and advertising convinces us otherwise.

What is Rhassoul clay?

Rhassoul comes from the Arabic word "rassala" meaning "washing’’. It is found deep beneath the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. This clay is probably one of the most perfect clays in the world, because it is ideal for all skin care and dermatological uses. (3)

Rhassoul has been used for over 1400 years by nobles in ancient Rome and Egypt as a soap, shampoo and skin conditioner. It has an outstanding ability to cleanse, nourish and condition the skin and hair. (3)

Properties of Rhassoul clay?

Easy to use Rhassoul is 100% natural and ecological.

It contains higher percentages of silica, magnesium, potassium, calcium and other trace minerals than other clays. These minerals make the clay highly detoxifying as they can actually exchange themselves for toxic compounds like metals in the skin. The clay not only works to remove impurities from your skin, it also replaces them with nourishing trace minerals. The clay's high level of ions exchange makes it ideal for toning and enriching the skin. Perhaps the best part about Rhassoul clay is what it doesn't contain! Uses of Rhassoul clay?

Using Rhassoul Clay as Shampoo?

The amount of Rhassoul clay you use will depend on the length and thickness of your hair.

With a non-metallic bowl and spoon mix the clay with warm water or rose water to obtain a smooth creamy paste let the mixture hydrate for 5 to 10 minutes.(3)
Wet your hair and divide it into 4 sections. Curly hair is delicate and can be oversensitive to rough handling so apply clay gently.
Leave it in your hair for about 15 – 20 minutes.
Rinse your hair thoroughly with cool water, then condition and style.

The results are fantastic! Rhassoul removes build-up and leaves your hair clean, and moisturized!

Hint:

I conditioned with Carina’s Certified Organic Daily light conditioner {I left it in my hair for approximately 1 hour} and then rinsed off with apple cider vinegar.

Moroccan oil review: SILICONE alert!

Have you ever wondered why silicone is bad for your hair? Read this article slowly & carefully, it may answer some of your questions.

What is silicone? Silicones are synthetic polymers.

In layman’s terms: synthetic polymers are derived from petroleum oil and made by scientists and engineers. 1

The word POLYMER is a more technical term for plastic! 2

Which brings me back, again, to the same question: “Why would anyone want to put petroleum oil or plastic on their hair or skin?”

The first 3 ingredients in Moroccan oil are silicones.

Below is a break down of Moroccan oil’s ingredients in comparison to Moroccan Argan oil [100% Pure]

Moroccan Oil vs 100% Pure Argan Oil

Cyclopentasiloxane: While ~~silicones~~ plastic such as cyclopentasiloxane do not appear to have adverse effects on the human body, there are many concerns regarding the harmful effects it may have on the environment. For this reason, many countries like Canada have requested the silicone industry to provide more information and scientific data regarding its safety.

Cyclopentasiloxane may cause mild skin and eye irritation, according to the ingredient's material safety data sheet. Also a small percentage of it reaches systemic circulation through dermal absorption, as found in a study by the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences. 4

Dimethicone is a silicone derived emollient. Silicone emollient is occlusive - meaning they do not allow the skin to breathe (much like plastic wrap would do.) Recent studies have indicated that prolonged exposure of the skin to sweat, by occlusion, causes skin irritation. Some synthetic emollients are known tumour promoters and accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes. They are also non-biodegradable, causing negative environmental impact.

Silicone was and still is used as breast implants. Tens of thousands of women with breast implants have complained of debilitating symptoms. Anecdotal evidence indicates silicone to be toxic to the human body. For more detailed information on the dangers of silicone simply key "silicone toxicity" into the Google search engine. 3

Butylphenyl methylpropional: is a synthetic fragrance . Adverse effects – Skin irritant, sensitiser. In animals, skin applications at high concentrations caused sperm damage and central nervous system effects such as drowsiness and breathing difficulties. 5

Argania spinoza kernel oil: Argan oil (however there is no indication as to whether it is cold pressed or chemically extracted. If it is chemically processed there is a high probability that most of its unique properties have been lost).

Linseed extract, comes from the seed of flax plants, it is a mucilage emollient that is soothing to skin. 9

Fragrance supplement: limited information.

D&C Yellow-11, Color safe for external use only, is however not approved for use around eyes, or in eye products. 6

D&C Red-17 (CI 26100) characterized as a possible carcinogen. 11

Coumarin formerly the active ingredient in rat poison. A carcinogenic ingredient used in the manufacturing of deodorants, shampoos, skin fresheners and perfumes, and found here. 6

Benzyl benzoate has been shown to irritate the skin with some individuals, and should be avoided by those with a perfume allergy. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has restricted the use Benzyl Benzoate in fragrances because of the potential dermal sensitization. In Europe, it is listed as an "allergenic" substance and the European Cosmetics Directive requires OTC leave-on products to indicate its presence, even at concentrations of .001%. 7

Alpha-isomethyl ionone the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) banned this ingredient from being mixed into fragrance products (i.e. perfume, cologne). But you can still find this ingredient in a variety of other cosmetics that are not categorized as a “fragrance." 8

Often referred to as “liquid gold,” argan oil has long been valued in Morocco for its cosmetic and medicinal benefits. Extremely rich in vitamin E, antioxidant-packed argan oil has also been prominent in European skincare products for centuries, after its first appearance in Amsterdam in 1711. 10

Produced from the kernels of a rare and ancient tree, argan oil is all natural and completely organic. With cold-press extraction, the argan kernel yields a lightweight oil that absorbs much more quickly and yet is far less greasy than other oils, including olive oil. That fast rate of absorbency coupled with argan oil’s store of moisturizing essential fatty acids and anti-aging carotenes make it ideal for cosmetic purposes, as it quickly softens skin and reduces the fine lines of aging without clogging pores. 10

Spritzing can help keep hair moisturised, nourished and healthy. It'seasy to make your own natural misters out of oils, rose water and distilledwater. (2)

I had my big chop in 2009. And even though Iwas natural I was still experiencing hair breakage. Later on, I found out itwas due to dryness and constant blow-drying. I’ve stopped applying direct heatto my hair, and apart from losing about 40 -100 strands daily (which is normal),my hair does not break.

My hair is type 4b, meaning I have fragilecurls that get dry easily and need lots of moisture to thrive. I remembergrowing up and dreading the rain, especially after a great hair-do, but now itdoes not vex me.

Benefits of Spritzing Hair

In dry climates,hair can quickly become parched and tangly when left to its own devices. Manyso-called moisturising products that are commercially produced are laden withsilicones, which not only coat the hair but also create build up over time,preventing moisture getting in as well as out.

If the hair is notclarified regularly, these products tend to result in dry, brittle hair. (2)

Natural Ingredients for Homemade Hair Spritzers

Distilled water forms the base for most hairspritzers. Hard water can build up mineral deposits on the hair, discolouringit and causing brittleness. Distilled water is completely pure and results insoft, silky-feeling hair. (2)

My spritz spray bottle contains:

100ml Rose water (100% natural)
200ml Aloe vera juice
5 drops of pure (not synthetic) Jojoba oil,lavender oil, or sweet almond oil.

Combine all ingredients and apply all overyour hair or to individual strands.

This is a natural, healthy and affordable wayto keep your hair in good condition. I spritz my hair at night before going tobed and in the morning a few hours before I step out. After spritzing, to lockin moisture I use Pure 100% Castor oil or Shea butter.

Storing Homemade Hair Spritzers

Dependingon the ingredients, most spritzers will keep for a few weeks at roomtemperature or in the fridge. It’s worthwhile to make up small quantities atfirst, in order to tweak ingredients if necessary. Distilled water by itselfwill keep indefinitely. (2)

Tips:

Start simple and always do an allergy testfirst. I don’t spritz with vegetable glycerin simply because it causes me tobreakout badly on my forehead.
Rose water benefits include antibacterial, soothing, healing and antiseptic properties. It is very rich in flavonoids and vitamins, including A, C, D, E and B3. Rose water is very beneficial for hair, that is why it is frequently used as an ingredient for hair care products and shampoos. Rose water increases blood flow to scalp, this way nourishing and strengthening hair follicles and preventing hair loss. (1)
Aloe Vera is a completely natural hydratingand conditioning substance that is therapeutic for your scalp. Be sure to getthe edible type of Aloe Vera juice (the kind that has to be refrigerated afteropening), which can be found in health food stores. (3)

Bio oil: Skin and Beauty

Most of us look for permanent solutions to stretchmark’s, scars, acne, uneven skin tones and aging. Bio oil promises us answers.

To say that I have tried this product and not seen good results would be lying. Yet, I have seen the same results (if not better) with 100% Pure Unrefined (Grade A, Fairtrade certified) Shea butter.

Here’s the deal…if you are looking for a drive through breakthrough, Bio oil works. At least it did for me.

However, you might want to consider the long-term side effects; which could be negative.

The Environmental Working Group Skin Deep Database rates Bio oil at a 7 (High Hazard). Furthermore, there is limited scientific research available on this product, which raises the issue of caution when considering it. Lastly, they are non-signers of the Compact for Safe cosmetics. Ingredients:

Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Triisononanoin, Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate, Isopropyl Myristate, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Bht, Bisabolol, Parfum (Fragrance), Amyl Cinnamal, Benzyl Salicylate, Citronellol, Coumarin, Eugenol, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Limonene, Linalool, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Red 17.

This is most definitely a mouthful!

The aim of this site is not to run down mainstream cosmetic companies but rather push them to use safer ingredients.

While bio oil has natural oils…it also contains mineral oil, several chemicals, synthetic oils & fragrance. Below is a breakdown of its highly controversial ingredients.

Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil)

Mineral oil is a petro-chemical derivative that is harmful to the skin. Putting mineral oil on your skin is like wrapping it in plastic wrap. The skin is not able to absorb nutrients and it can't detoxify, which renders beneficial ingredients ineffective and results in premature aging. (2)

So much for Bio oil’s claim with helping to combat aging…

The company maintains that it uses a “breakthrough ingredient” known as PurCellin oil. As it turns out, this oil is derived from ducks. It is the substance ducks secrete from their skin to keep their feathers waterproof. (1)
I have found no research proving the effects of Purcelling Oil for treatment of skin concerns that Bio-Oil is promoting. Moreover, PurCellin oil isn’t even included on Bio-Oil’s ingredient list on both their product package or their website.
Isopropyl myristate is found in many everyday beauty products and is generally considered safe for consumer use. Despite its popularity with manufacturers, some side effects have been reported such as skin irritations, clogged pores and acne inflammation. It is generally safe, although those with sensitive skin conditions may wish to avoid products containing this ingredient. (8)

BHT According to the National Library of Medicine HazMap, BHT is considered to be a "known immune system toxicant." Animal studies have also shown that in low doses, BHT causes negative effects to the brain and nervous system. This study was published by the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry in 1980 and has yet to be refuted. There are a host of bans and restrictions on BHT across the globe, yet it is still used here. (4)

Parfum There is no “right to know” for fragranced products: Ingredients in fragrances are considered to be “confidential business information” and “trade secrets” and do not have to be revealed to the consumer even when the product has been reported to cause human health problems. Clearly the self-regulatory process for fragranced products is seriously flawed. At best it is inadequate and at worst dangerously misleading. (5)

Fragrances are used daily in personal care, household and cleaning products by millions of people and while most may believe they are using safe products the truth is that the actual safety of fragranced products remains uncertain and largely untested (5)

Amyl Cinnamal This highly allergenic fragrance ingredient is an alcohol, even though the label doesn't say "amyl cinnamal alcohol" as it should. Also, it is a known toxicant to the immune system in humans. (4)

Benzyl Salicylate UV absorber. Does have salicylic acid as a component, which is not to be used by pregnant women. (4)

Coumarin According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, the popular lavender scented ingredient coumarin may pose a significant health risk and should not be added to personal care products for babies and toddlers. Coumarin is on the EU's list of banned and/or restricted ingredients (3)

It is found in this product as a fragrance ingredient.

Eugenol is a denaturant and fragrance component. It is highly toxic and also on the EU's banned/restricted list. The National Library of Medicine HazMap calls this a "known human immune system toxicant." (4)

Geraniol Masking fragrance, toning agent. Known to be a strong toxin; banned or restricted in other countries; a known environmental toxin (4)

Hydroxycitronellal Yet another masking fragrance! A known immune system toxicant; also banned or restricted in the EU and other areas (4)

Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde- fragrance component (4)

Limonene skin sensitizer; for perfume. Restricted/banned in other countries (4)

Linalool Masking fragrance; shown to be hazardous, banned/restricted for use in other countries (4)

Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) banned the ingredient from being mixed into fragrance products (i.e. perfume, cologne). Interestingly you can still find this ingredient in a variety of other cosmetics that are not categorized as a “fragrance.” (6)

Our verdict @ Shakara Natural Tips: NOT RECOMMENDED!

Solving a problem with methods that only create more problems should never be an option. (2)

Natural is always the best alternative…there are no adverse side effects

M.A.C cosmetics give you a perfect look and a flawless finish. It was a great choice for me…until last week.

I blog to get my readers to begin to ask questions about safe cosmetics, be aware of safe natural hair and skin products that give great results; if not better!

In my day job I sell fair trade products; as well as educate customers on the values of fairness and equality in the marketplace. Because of this, I’m becoming more cautious of what I choose to eat; as well as my choice of skin and hair care products. This is a recent shift; my only regret is not knowing this earlier.

I’ve wrestled with the probability of an all-natural make-up. However, is this even possible?

African tribes such as the Himba’s of northern Namibia and the Wodaabe Fulani of Niger Republic use natural red Ochre to beautify themselves, so the answer is YES!

Truth be told, today, there are many toxic chemicals in cosmetic products that have been clinically proven to cause cancer, tumors, irritation and many different skin disorders. (3)

Many problematic ingredients, including parabens, have always been legal to use in the U.S. and Canada. Only recently, when studies have drawn correlations between their use and breast cancer, has concern been raised. Up to this time, many — possibly most — makers of natural personal care products were not aware of the hazards of these ingredients. (1)

Helpful tips to protect you involve reading and interpreting labels. It takes a bit of work but it’s so worth it.

Personally I avoid cosmetics that contain parabens, artificial fragrances, chemical preservatives, talc, and artificial colours. Then what choice is left? They are many alternative choices that work –just as well. Keep reading…

In my opinion, only a scientist can understand these ingredients!

Last week my dilemma was put to rest. I stumbled upon an all-natural makeup company “100% Pure” and the results are refreshingly amazing!

To start I bought their tinted moisturizer with vitamins and antioxidants, which is kind of a foundation but with lighter coverage. How to Check for Toxins in Your Products?

In a massive undertaking, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) analyzed the health and safety reviews of 10,000 ingredients in personal care products. The EWG discovered that there is scant research available to document the safety or health risks of low-dose repeated exposures to chemical mixtures. But the absence of data should never be mistaken for proof of safety. The EWG points out that the more we study low-dose exposures, the more we understand that they can cause adverse effects ranging from the subtle and reversible, to effects that are more serious and permanent. (1)

I use the EWG Skin deep database and safe cosmetics.org frequently to decrypt safe ingredients!

Eco Styler Gel: Love it or Loathe it

Have you ever used Eco styler gel? Numerous YouTube tutorials on natural hair recommend Eco styler gel.Why not? It offers maximum hold; contains 100% Olive oil and, has no alcohol! Thus,I decided to give this one a try.

As you all know [if you follow my blog] I always readingredients. To my surprise, this one raised many flags.

Nonetheless I bought a jar for $3.99 [CDN] and leftthe store. Rule of thumb #1, if you can’t eat it don’t put it on your skin.

Upon getting home I compared my jar of Kinky Curly custard gelto ECO styler gel. Kinky Curly custard’singredients are listed as follows:

Botanical fusion of water, horsetail, chamomile,nettle and marshmallow, organic aloe vera juice, agave nectar extract,tocopheryl acetate (vitamin e), pectin, citric acid, potassium sorbate andnatural fragrance.

Quite easy to read and pronounce, right?

I’m always amazed at cosmetics that have the word“natural” highlighted boldly in front of the product, but when you start readingthe ingredients you quickly discover that there is nothing natural about it. Inthe case of Eco styler gel, ECO [a prefix relating to ecological orenvironmental terms (11)] and 100% Olive Oil are emphasized, but olive oil is the 10^thingredient out of 15...which is way down on the list. Consequently, doesthis not represent green washing?

Greenwashing is a form of spin in which greenPR or green marketing is deceptively used to promotethe perception that a company's policiesor products are environmentally friendly. (12)

Once again, curiosity got the better of me and I didsome digging. This is what I found:

Here is a list of Eco styler gel’s ingredients, in orderof percentage, and as they appear on the jar: Water, Carbomer, Hydrolyzed WheatProtein, PVP, Glycerin, Triethanolamine, Sodium Hydrxymethylglycinate,Polysorbate 20, Tetrasodium EDTA, Olive oil, Fragrance, Blue #1, Yellow #11,LOVE AND PRIDE.

For starters it has so many unpronounceableingredients, but what do they mean??

Carbomers and water are the top two ingredients inside Ecostyler Gel.

Carbomersare plasticisers used to thicken cosmetics. While they are safe ingredients incosmetics and personal care products, they are also cheap fillers. Carbomersmake products feel luxurious on the skin and since the formula contains a lotof water, it will also appear to soak in quickly. (7)

Sincethere is a great deal of water, there is less room for oils and butters. Putsimply, Carbomers are economical, so they are used to keep manufacturer’s costsdown. (7)

PVP (polyvinyl pyrrolidone) is a petroleum-derived chemicalused in cosmetics. According to the Organics Consumer Association, It can beconsidered toxic, since particles may contribute to foreign bodies in the lungsof sensitive persons. The Cosmetic Ingredients Review Expert Panel howeverconsiders PVP safe. (1)

What is of greater concern to me is why anyonewould want to put petroleum (i.e. black oil derived from the ground) on his or her skin.

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein: If you haveCeliac disease you may want to avoid any cosmetics that contain wheat. (10)

Asstated by the Organics Consumer Association, Triethanolamine is often used in cosmetics toadjust the pH, as well as with many fatty acids to convert acid to salt(stearate), which then becomes the base for a cleanser. TEA causes allergicreactions including eye problems, dryness of hair and skin, and could be toxicif absorbed into the body over a long period of time. (1)

SodiumHydroxymethylglycinate is NOT a natural preservative. Its allergic reactions includeskin and eye irritations and those with sensitive skin are advised to stay clearfrom it. In truth, there have been no studies on the long-term effects of thispreservative on the skin. (5)

Polysorbate-20 is afragrance component, surfactant, an emulsifying agent, and solubilizingagent. Why is it a risk?

Polysorbate starts out asharmless sorbitol, but then it's treated with carcinogenic ethyleneoxide. It's called Polysorbate 20 because it's treated with20 "parts" of ethylene oxide. The higher the number, themore ethylene oxide it has been treated with. This substance is thencombined with various fatty acids. The Skin Deep Database rates itas only a "one" [meaning safe] and doesn't pick up on the risk that it could becontaminated with ethylene oxide, and subsequently, 1,4 dioxane. Inaddition, it can be laced with heavy metals. (4)

TetrasodiumEDTA is a preservative that’s made from the known carcinogen,formaldehyde and sodium cyanide. It is also a penetration enhancer, meaning itbreaks down the skin's protective barrier, going right into your bloodstream.Many companies trying to be "natural" will use Tetrasodium EDTAinstead of parabens to preserve their products. It is safe to say, TetrasodiumEDTA is just as bad. (9)

“Fragrance” can be oneor more of 200 chemicals.

Companiesdon't have to disclose the actual components of each fragrance, under the guisethat their fragrances are trade secrets. Fragrance has been known to cause manyside effects, including headaches and allergic reactions. Why put an unknownsynthetic chemical on your skin when you don’t have to? The EnvironmentalWorking Group has an extensive database of cosmetic chemicals and theircorresponding danger rankings. "Fragrance" receives one of thehighest rankings possible in their score system. (1)(8)

Artificialcolors, such as Blue 1 are carcinogenic. (2)

Yellow #11:suspected carcinogen. One is advised to avoid this if possible. (3)

Something else, a dear friend of mine [Yinka] used toset her hair with Aloe Vera as far back as ’97. She says the hairdresser wouldjust use a tail comb to part the aloe vera leaf open and scrap out the gel. Then, she’ll apply it to her hair and roll it. It was sticky icky but itworked wonders. In my opinion, I prefer aloe vera plant or kinkycurly.

Finally, remember I simply share what has workedfor me and the products I feel comfortable using. I do plenty of research, readingredients and stay informed. You are free to do the same if you choose to anddraw your own conclusions.

Holy Molasses!

Simplesolutions in your kitchen

If Icould credit the start of my natural hair journey to anyone, it will have to be my husbandand sister. Today I’ll be sharing a recipe I learned from my sister, which I’vealtered to suit my hair. I can’t say enough about making your own recipes, forone it's cheaper, another reason is the freedom and liberty to experiment withstuff!

Forthis recipe, be prepared for a messy sink or bathtub! But the results…are SOworth it.

1 free-range egg [youmight need 2 eggs for long hair]

1-2 tablespoons of Blackstrap Molasses.

3 cups cooled blacktea [organic & fair-trade certified]

Directions:Step 1

Combinethe eggs and molasses and stir to blend.

Wetyour hair as usual or leave it dry. Personally, I prefer to do this on dryhair.

Massagemixture into hair and scalp, concentrating on the ends of your hair.

Puton a shower cap and sit for 15minutes.

Rinseoff with black tea.

Step 2 (Co-wash)

Applyconditioner to your wet hair [still targeting the ends]

Wrapyour hair in a towel and leave on for at least 1 hour, before rinsing offthoroughly with cool water.

Thenapply leave –in conditioner and proceed to style!

Benefits:

Raw Eggsare rich in protein and essential nutrients thus they help strengthen hairfollicles

Blackstrap molasses is rich in copper, iron, calcium, manganese, potassium andmagnesium. It promotes hair growth, as well as helps to combat grey hair.

SubstituteHoney for Molasses sometimes. Honey helps to add moisture to hair.

Tip:

Donot wash your hair with hot water otherwise the eggs will cook on your head!
Ideep condition with eggs & Molasses once a week
Alwaysdry your hair with paper towels, an old cotton T-shirt or a micro-fiber towel. Standard towels leaveyour hair frizzy!
What's blackstrap molasses? Blackstrap molasses is made from the third boiling of sugar syrup and rich in several essential nutrients.

12 Reasons to Chuck Commercial Deodorants/Antiperspirants

Last year I was on a quest to find a naturaldeodorant; it was a very challenging task. If you’ve been reading my blog you’llhave gathered I’m a huge fan of anything natural. Whenever I can help it, Ilimit my use of chemicals to the minimum. Not an easy task in our world.

There are so many studies, debates andcounter debates about whether or not aluminum and parabens found in mostcommercial antiperspirants/deodorants really do cause breast cancer,Alzheimer’s disease, as well as other ailments. According to the FDA both are “safe”.[1] [3] [6]

However,FDA regulation does not mean that a drugis without danger. That’s right; antiperspirants are classified as over thecounter (OTC) drugs in the US! [1][5] Nobody thinks of it as a drug but it is.

In Canada, as of Spring 2009, "regular" antiperspirants are classified under cosmetics.

There are manyproducts, or their ingredients, which are controversial because of possiblenegative health effects but these products are not taken off the shelf, until proven unsafe.[1] [3]

Often, the FDA and Health Canada do notconsider the evidence of danger to consumer’s health strong enough to takeaction. (Remember theJohnson+Johnson scandal?)

It took me 10 months to find a natural deodorant that works. I tried baking soda and Druidenatural deodorant, neither was successful. To add salt to injury, during thisperiod, I had many embarrassing moments.

A tale for another day…

However, every cloud has a silver lining. Lately, I’vebeen getting ready to send my brother [who lives in Hungary] a parcel of allnatural products. Once again, I found myself standing in the aisle ofGrassroots looking for natural deodorants. After much consideration, I finallydecided on Lafes deodorant stick. I’m currently using it and cannot believe theeffectiveness! I’ve been using it since Christmas.

Lafes Deodorant stick is made up of natural mineralsalts. It contains no aluminum chlorhydrate, parabens or fragrance. Additionally,1% of all profits go towards breast cancer awareness and prevention.

Once a day [every morning] I wet the stone and apply it liberally to my underarms, there is NO smell throughout the day. Lafes also has aroll-on deodorant, but I find the mineral salt stick works better for me.

Only 5 – 10% of breast cancer isgenetic, 90% are from the environment and lifestyle. [1]

Applying parabens to the skin isone of the most effective ways to get it into your system. [1]

Do not assume that products thatare labeled “natural” or “organic” do not contain parabens, [also study smallor fine print]. [1]

Unfortunately most cosmetics we use contain parabens. A 1995 survey of 215 cosmetic products found that parabens were used in 99% of leave-on products and in 77% of rinse-off cosmetics.[1]

Nettle: conditions, improves color and texture, helps with dandruff, irritatedscalp, and dry scalp 

Parsley: enriches hair color and gives a nice luster 

Plantain: great for dry, irritated scalp, dandruff, andseborrhea 

Peppermint: stimulates the scalp  

Red Clover:  strengthens hair

Apple Cider Vinegar has a strong smell, but remember its natural; most perfumes we love contain harmful ingredients.

I’vealways believed that if we knew half the truth about a lot of cosmetics we buy,it would undoubtedly change our outlook.

RecentlyJohnson & Johnson were in the news for having “chemicals of concern” [humancarcinogens] in their iconic baby shampoo. While all the focus is on their babyshampoo nothing is being said about their Aveeno and Neutrogena brands, whichstill contain harmful toxins. The company came out with a statement promising consumersthat it would be removing quaternium -15 and other formaldehyde – releasingpreservatives from all of its baby products worldwide within 2 years. http://tinyurl.com/3guhv3r

PersonallyI think 2 years is a while.

Fivemonths ago, I made a decision to stop using shampoos. It came like a brainwave.In the old days our grandparents and their parents before them did not useshampoos, they used soap, so why the shift?

In afew words, our water became hard, which made using soap increasingly difficult;so shampoos were invented.

Shampoosare detergents; while they are very effective they are a lot harsher, striping one’shair of its natural oils. Conditioners - made up of artificial oils - were developedto mask this damage. After doing some research on this issue I’ve simply eliminatedshampoos altogether.

Myroutine involves using the following:

DuduOsun or “Ose Dudu” [as we call itback home in Lagos, Nigeria] is an age long black soap made by hand, using onlypure natural ingredients. I often say all of its ingredients you can pronounce!!

Thesoap is made using pure Honey, Shea butter, Osun (Camwood extract), Palm kerneloil, Cocoa pod ash, Palm bunch ash, Aloe Vera, Lime juice, Water and fragrance.It contains no artificial colours or preservatives and is biodegradable.

Ifind that it has a deep cleansing effect; I’ve also used it in treating acneand dark spots.

RawGhana Black soap is more organic than Dudu Osun. It has NO fragrance. If you’veever tried to buy this soap you’ll see that it’s not fancy at all!

Itis handmade by local women in Ghana using Plantain skins, Shea butter, native Honey,virgin Coconut oil, cocoa pod ash and Palm kernel oil. Its benefits areimmeasurable.

Neithersoaps have alcohol or petroleum-by-products, and they lather really well!

Ruleof thumb: If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.

Bakingsoda: I’ve discovered you can use it for pretty much anything! Itsenvironmentally friendly, in-expensive and can be bought anywhere!

Whatto do?

Mix1 Tbsp of baking soda with 8 oz of lukewarm water and wash your hair.

Atfirst it might seem weird because baking soda neither lathers nor has a scent,but it’s a healthy alternative that works rather well. It will remove odor plusany build up from oil and dirt, leaving you and your hair feeling fresh.

Lastly,condition only. This may seem radical, but the results are incredible.

Theprocess?

Wetyour hair first, and then gently massage conditioner into your scalp and hair. Youwill have to work at it to remove dirt and oil build up, then rinse out withlukewarm water. I recommend you do this twice.

Thethird time you apply your conditioner let it sit for a few minutes, then rinseout with cold water, to seal yourpores. This final step is necessary because it gives your hair a healthy sheen.

ConditionersI’m currently using:

MixedChicks & Uncle Funky’s Daughter Richee Rich Moisturizing Conditioner (forkinky and curly texture). It’s free of Mineral oil, Paraben and Synthetic Dyes.

How to get great youthful skin naturally without exfoliating!

Ola walked into our store; she needed to pick up a check that was owed to her. We began talking about a number of things, and the topic of exfoliating came up. She was complaining about the brand she was currently using and was considering trying our 100% Red Moroccan (Ghassoul) Clay. Which by the way is great!

I told her I do not exfoliate. To be completely honest with you I don’t remember the last time I did. She did not believe me, saying I had such great skin that it was impossible that I did not exfoliate.

I replied, “I don’t. I use natural oils and they do wonders!”

If truth were told, I read labels, if I cannot pronounce the ingredients on any product, I do not consider it.

We all know that when one’s diet changes, for the better, our skin will automatically glow. Drinking lots of water also improves our skin and hair, but I take going natural a little step further.

As consumers, it is important to know that we have the power to say either yes or no to any product by simply reading the label, whether it is cosmetics or food. It might seem like a lot of work, but it takes discipline and motivation.

There are 3 oils I use to maintain my face daily:

· Pure 100% Castor oil
· Tea tree oil, and;
· Pure Unrefined 100% Baobab oil

I use Castor oil only at night. I am not particularly loyal to any brand; at the moment I’m using Benjamin’s Castor oil. It is made in Jamaica, 30ml retails for $3.99.

Nonetheless, before getting started always do an allergy test to avoid any problems.

First, I steam my face with castor oil for about 10 – 20 minutes, and then I gently wash it off with warm water. Then, I splash cold water over my face to close my pores. Finally, I reapply castor oil to problematic spots before heading to bed.

I do this every night alternating between castor oil and tea tree oil. Following the same process, which involves steaming, as described above.

Steaming the face is so simple, plus it has huge benefits! It opens up the pores; removes dead skin cells, dirt, bacteria, and increases the blood circulation on the face.

Likewise, every morning I steam for about 10 – 15 minutes and apply baobab oil. Please note: I do not use any face creams, I rely solely on natural oils. If I am applying make up, which I try not to, baobab oil is my base. It is an excellent moisturizer.

A lot of spas use steaming as treatment for both the face and body, it is an age long beauty secret, but you can do it yourself without spending a dime!

Tips:

Take the hot water out of the pot and pour it into a bowl, tie your hair back, then place a towel over your head and lean towards the steam for 10 – 20 minutes.

Be careful not to burn yourself and please do not steam your face while the water is still boiling on the stove.

Give your face a break. After about a week of steaming, I take a break for a few days and then resume the process.

I’ve always been vain and I care a lot about the way my hair and skin look. To be completely honest, my culture and background do not help! Nigerian women are beautiful with flawless radiant skin, and they put a lot of effort into their outward appearance.

Since I am Nigerian, what can I say; my appearance comes first!

However, in the past 2 years things have changed, especially after meeting my husband, he’s an advocate for natural beauty. But what is natural beauty?

Back home, in Africa, I was brought up with hair extensions, relaxers, and numerous cosmetic lines to “maintain” my complexion. In fact, if one did not use hair extensions you were considered a “villager” or “bush.”

As a moisturizer, I remember on occasion my mum brought home Shea butter, but we mostly used Vaseline petroleum jelly. Then, during my teen years I even tried Skin Success [whatever possessed me???]

Twice a week, I will blog about my journey, one that involves using natural God given products. I will alternate between the hair and the skin, highlighting the need to quit depending on commercial products that do not only harm and destroy our hair and skin, but may also contain potential health risks.

Generally, I find natural products are inexpensive, they may not work as well as some of the other products you are using immediately, but with time you will see a difference.

Lastly, one piece of advice: before buying anything read the ingredients. If there is anything you can’t pronounce, drop it. Research, research and research because this will empower you in making informed choices. We recently visited family for Christmas holidays in Guelph and Waterloo, and I needed to clean my face, travelling sometimes disrupts one’s routine; I stopped at Shoppers drug mart and decided to get face wipes. Face wipes right? That should be easy...

Typically I picked up a few brands and began reading the ingredients, they were unbelievably unpronounceable! I settled for a box of baking soda and 100% cotton exfoliating pads, a much better and healthier option.
